The whole sentence? It's rather long...but alright.
This man, a Mr. Kimber, had promised Jack that the disused lead-mines on his land could be made to produce not only more lead but also a surprising amount of silver by a process known to Mr. Kimber alone, thereby yielding a very handsome return indeed upon the initial outlay; yet the last letters that Captain Aubrey had ever received from his wife, far away in the East Indies, before he was captured by the Americans on his return voyage to England, had spoken not of yield, not of profit, but of obscure unauthorized doings on the part of Kimber, of very heavy new investments in roads, mining-equipment, a steam-engine, deep-sunk shafts...He longed to have this clarified; and he was tolerably confident that it would be clarified, for whereas Sophie and Stephen Maturin understood nothing of business, Jack had based his opinion upon solid facts and figures, not mere intuition: in any case, he had a far greater knowledge of the world than either of them.
Yikes, Patrick O'Brian must have a phobia of periods.

I discovered this ridiculous poem while browsing through some old entries...it made me think of all the good and bad times of being a teacher's assistant senior year. I almost missed it--until I started remembering things like the Gerber jar that Ms. Saul kept on top of the computer that I entered grades into...I used to stare at that jar for minutes on end....and the tiny brain that was suspended in a dubious fluid within...
...and its peeling label that read "Matt and Jon's Brain."
er...on to the poem.
Oh sylvan historian of cubic proportion,
Counting off endless segments of sliced tree
And chirping madly like a pond of frogs:
No more shall I stand by thy unergonomically
Designed sides, no more to place fondly
A paperclip in that small convenient tray.
The familiar click of thy LTR paper drawer
Shall now be stranger to my grateful ears,
Only in imperfect memory will it resound.

I just found out that Novocain is a "synthetic from of cocaine." This is news to me. Maybe the Novocain/Cocaine similarity should have cued me in earlier...
I used to be a heavy user back in the day.
Seriously, though, I had a really high tolerance.
*gives dentist a death glare for administering large amounts of synthesized cocaine to children*

No, really.
When I signed up for Psychology this quarter, I unconsciously assumed that...it would be normal. (I guess that was a stupid assumption, since I am, after all, attending Clark College.)
One of the people who helps Psych to be everything other than normal is Britney. Every day, she comes to class seven minutes early and sits in the front row toward the center. (Normal, right?) Then it gets good. She turns her head, and, with an expression that uncannily resembles Luna Lovegood's, she speaks.
The first day of class it was something very mundane and comfortably appropriate for the setting.
By the second week, however, things had gone bizarre.
"Have you ever been pooped on by a seagull?" she inquired.
".............no?" I choked.
"Oh."
(LONG pause)
"So, um...have you?" I prodded curiously, hoping she would say no. Then it would be PURELY random.
"Yes," she began,
(I was disappointed.)
"today in fact."
(VERY long pause)
"Oh." It was still before noon and I wasn't feeling very loquacious.
Fortunately, Britney couldn't sense that.
"Yes, I was walking under a street light."
"I got pooped on twice." I countered viciously. (I was still disappointed she had said "yes.")
I briefly acquainted her with the less boring details, since she seemed deeply intrigued with sharing this new life experience. Sadly, class began before I could reach the climax, but she, smiling with a happily vacant expression, seemed appeased by the succinct introduction.

So today I had a break from 2:00pm until 4:00pm. "Great!" I thought, "I can study for that Psych test I have tomorrow!" But what I FORGOT was...I was going to Scarpelli to WORK at 4pm, and that my car is parked a MILLION miles away from there...dang. I totally forgot to re-park it in those two whole free hours!!!!
And it's sort of pouring. Hopefully it stops by nine...*beats head on desk*

Wow, I can see how this job could really spoil someone for a "real-life job." You show up, plop your stuff down by a computer, and get paid to look up stuff on facebook...oh yeah, and to change student pins, refill printers with paper...and......that's about it. I didn't even have to clock in. Weird. No uniform either, just a badge. The trick is to try to blend in with the other students so that they will ask the OTHER labbies for help...because I don't know all the answers yet. I look forward to that day.
